We have got lots of requests from our readers asking for some ideas and tricks that will help them to crack an interview process. So, we collected some set of Interview Experience of different companies through our student representatives and TPR’s of different colleges. As this is going to be our first featured post about Interview Experience, so we though that it should be something special in terms of ideas and tricks to crack an interview. So we though that it will be better if we take advice from an IIT student, who recently got an offer from US based company and give you the approach you should follow to crack an interview. Our Interview Time Group Team tried to give you the best approach.
We will try to give you the overall approach you should follow to crack an interview based on your project without going through the details about technical and HR interview step by step process.
In our maximum sets of collected Interview Experience, we found that the first question was “Introduce Yourself.". You can expect the same question as the first and most important question.
You must be thinking that why we are saying this simple common question as most important question. So, wait, we are going to explain it.
This question has the potential to decide the direction of your interview. So, with the help of this question, you can take the control of the whole technical as well as HR interview process. It means you can increase the probability that the interviewer will ask you that questions what you want them to ask you.
Let's come into some details how to make it possible.
So, first thing you have to do is to make a proper structure of the points what you will be going to say in the interview for your “ Introduce Yourself” question. So, let’s give any example to make it clear.
There are many formats by which you can start your answer. Here we are giving a general format, which you can follow.
I am ___________________, born and brought up at ___________________. I have completed my schooling from ______________ with ___% in 12th standard and __% in 10th standard. I am doing B.tech in _____________stream from ___________. CGPA up to 7th semester is _______.
Let’s first explain the above part, and then again, we will continue with remaining introduce yourself part. This is just a formal and short introduction about yourself. You can modify the above format in your style but keep this basic information in it.
This is the common format, so every single student will say the same in front of the interviewer.
So, how to make it different from others.
The approach how you speak will make it different. When you are saying the above lines, it should not look like that you have memorized it beforehand. It gives a bad impression, if its look like you are giving a speech in front of an interviewer that you have memorized. Just practice at home in front of mirror, and watch that it looks normal as you are having some formal discussion with someone. If you practice it twice you will be able to do that. We are saying this, as the whole interview is dependent on how you start and answer the first question.
Now let’s continue with the Introduce yourself part from where we left. We have to give a small description about our family background.
Now, coming to my family background. There are ___ members in my family, including me. My father is working in __________. My mother is a homemaker. I have __ sisters and __ brothers.
Keep it short and simple. If any of your sister or brother is working in IT company or any educational Institute, then you should also include their occupation, and mention the name of the company or educational Institute. If you are sitting in an interview for any IT company and any other member is already in this field, then try to highlight it in the family background section.
Now, coming to most important part. You have to give a short description about project, strong and weak points, the programming language you are good at and all that. It's totally on you what you want to include here.
Now, we will get some ideas from an IIT student, about how he faced his on-campus interview during a visit of a US based Company.
So, let’s get the idea how he used this “Introduce yourself” question to plan that he gets less number of technical question other than something related to his project. The trick will work to some extend in top high pay companies, but it will surely work for any mass recruitment and medium package companies. Those who are sitting for TCS, IBM, Cognizant, Capgemini, Infosys will surely be helpful by using this approach.
So, now let's see his way of facing the interview.
I will not go into much details about my whole interview process. I will only try to give you the tricks that can help you to increase the probability of getting selected. I am also going to explain one tricks that will help you to get less numbers of technical questions in interview other than related to your project.
After describing the personal details and family background, you can directly come to your project work part and give a very short description about it. Project plays a very vital role in technical Interview. A well-executed project can increase the chance of getting selected to 90%. If you have an interesting or uncommon project topic, you can expect the next question will be based on your project work after introduce yourself. You have to highlight the importance of your project, so that they ask more questions from your project work.
So, let's start by explaining some parts of my Interview Experience.
I have done a project on "Hack proof Online System". While giving short description about it during my interview, one of the interviewers stopped me in the middle and said, " hacking ???? ". As to give an appropriate answer to this question, I have to describe my project in details. So, I told the interviewer Sir, I will complete my introduce yourself, or directly I will start explaining the project in details.I have said this because the question "Introduce yourself" has been asked by a different interviewer. I think that you much complete every single question asked by the interviewer before going to the next if it's not one-sentence answer. It may happen that two or three questions have been asked to you at the same time, try to answer one by one.
The most common project related question you can expect from the interviewer is "Describe your Project in details" .So, you must go through every single part of the project thoroughly. In my point of view, this is the question where you can maximize your chances of selection.
To increase the probability of getting selected based on the project work you have to find something unique in your project. Try to find out how your techniques to solve the problems in your project is better than the techniques that are available in the Internet. In most cases, it will not be possible to find best solution, but try a different way of solving the problem. It must have some advantage and disadvantage from other related projects So, try to highlight it.
Now, again getting back to my interview Experience.
During my interview, when I was explaining the details of my project, I was getting to know that they are satisfied with my project and now the technical question other than project related will start. However, I wanted to explain more about my project and tell something more about the advantage of my project related to other projects of the same field. So, I take a paper for one the interviewer and started explaining the advantage and how the work is done by writing small actual algorithm. They are taking interest in that. So, by this way, I extend the explanation of my project work to 20 min more. Mainly, I have done two thinks by asking for a paper to the interviewer. This shown that how much I am confident and serious about my project work and extending the discussion about project work means that I was taking the discussion to the way I wanted. The above technique can be used in any mass recruiter company, to increase the probability of getting less numbers of technical questions in a interview other than related to your project. If you describe more about your project work, we will surely get less no of technical question and its surely would be advantage for you. In my case after the interview got over, I got to know that my friend got more technical questions than me.
In mass recruiter companies, generally each single question will be asked based on CV. So don't write anything only to impress the interviewers without knowing about it. You have to use your C.V to plan, how to highlight the strong points. The idea behind the type of question asked by an interviewer that you want is that you have to generate questions while you are answering. Generally, during describing your project, it's quite easy do this trick.
So, hope you have got some ideas how to take an interview to right direction.
We are getting mails from our readers asking for type of question asked in TCS, Infosys , IBM ,CTS , Capgemini during technical interview. Soon we will be posting specific interview experience of each company. Now we are specifying the general process you can follow for your preparation.
Programming Language: C and C++ or Java. (It's enough ). If you are good at some other, then only mention it. You much only mention the programming language you are good at. Mentioning five or six programming language doesn't increase the chance of getting selected.
You will be asked some basic questions from OS, Networking and DBMS. So try to go through it. Sometimes they may say you to write some algorithm, so go through the data structure part also.(Sorting, searching and their Complexity).
They may ask you for your favorite subject. So, mention the one you are good at and also try to restrict them to your favorite subject only. I think you have got some idea how to do that. Questions will be asked based on what is mentioned in your CV ,just go through it properly and go through the project work thoroughly.
The main thing is that, If you are confident enough during your interview, then already half of the battle is won.
