This set of placement paper is collected from on-campus recruitment (2013-14) at NIT, Surathkal. TCS new question pattern has more questions from permutation, combination, probability and Geometry. Try to give more importance to these chapters.
These questions are asked in TCS online Test at NIT Suratkal
1. The cost of 3 mangoes and 4 apples is Rs.85, 5 apples and 6 peaches costs 122 and that of 6 mangoes and 2 peaches costs Rs.114. What is the cost of 1 apple, 1 peach, and 1 mango?
Ans. 37
Explanation: Let denote mangoes with letter m, apple with letter a and peaches with letter p.
Now, its given that
3m + 4a = 85 ..(1)
5a + 6p = 122 ..(2)
6m + 2p = 114 ..(3)
Now , we have to find the value of m,a and p.
Multiply equation (1) with 5, we get  15m + 20a = 425             .......4
Multiply equation (2) with 4, we get 20a+24p = 488                 .......5
By solving equation (4) and (5), we get  15m-24p =-63             ......6
Multiply equation (3) with 5, we get 30m+10p= 570                  .....7
Multiply equation (6) with 2, we get 30m – 48p = -126             ......8
Solving equation (7) and (8) we get , p =12
Now, substitute the value of p in equation (7), we get m=15
Now, substitute the value of m in equation (4),we get a=10
Therefore , a+m+ p =10+15+12=37
2. An article manufactured by a company consists of two parts X and Y. In the process of manufacturing of part  X,  9  out  100  parts  may  be  defective.  Similarly,  5  out  of  100  are  likely  to  be  defective  in  the manufacturer of Y. Calculate the probability that the assembled product will not be defective?
Ans. 0.8645
Explanation: The assembled product is non defective if  both parts are non defective.
Probability that X is not defective = 1 - 9/100 = 91/100
Probability that X is not defective = 1 - 5/100 =95/100
Therefore, required probability that the product is not defective = 91/100 * 95/100 = .8645
3. A merchant buys 20kg of wheat at Rs.30.00 per kg and 40kg wheat at Rs.25.00 per kg. He mixes them and sell one third of the mixture at Rs.26.00 per kg. The price at which the merchant should sell the remaining mixture so that he may earn a profit of 25% on his whole outlay?
Ans  Rs 37
Explanation: Total CP = 20 * 30 + 40 * 25= 1600
SP = 125/100 * 1600= 2000 ( 25% profit )
SP for 20 kg mix = 26 * 20 =520
Remaining total SP  should be = 2000-520 = 1480
The SP for 40 kg = 1480/40 = 37
4. 1!+2!+3!...+50! when divided by 5!, the remainder is?
Ans 33
Explanation: 5! is 120 and all numbers from 5! to 50! are divisible by 5!. We have to check for the first 4 numbers i.e, from 1! to 4!. The addition is 1+2+6+24 = 33. Therefore, the remainder is 33.
5. 1-2+3-4+5…….-98+99 = ?
Ans 50
Explanation: 1-2 =-1,3-4=-1, so, we will have 49 such series ,therefore the total is -49 and the last term is 99. Therefore, 99-49=50
6. A child was looking for his father. He went 90 metres in the East before turning to his right.  He  went  20  metres  before  turning  to  his  right  again  to  look  for  his  father  at  his uncle’s place 30 metres from this point. His father was not there. From here he went 100 metres to the North before meeting his father in a street. How far did the son meet hisfather from the starting point?
Ans 100
7. A chocolates manufacturer makes 6 different flavors of chocolates. The chocolates are sold in boxes of 10. How many “different” boxes of chocolates can be made?
Ans. 3003
Explanation: Use the formula n+r−1C r−1
Here n =10 and r=6
Therefore, 10+6-1C6-1 = 3003
