IBM Placement Paper 2014

This set of Latest placement paper in collected from on-campus recruitment 2014. Try to practice each question from this set as IBM repeats its questions. You will surely get some 4 to 5 questions common in your Online Test. If you are in the lucky side, even you can expect more common questions. We are posting the exact questions that are asked in IBM on-campus recruitment.

Here are some questions from number series.

1. 1, 2, 3, 6, 11, 20, 37, 68, ?

Ans. 125

Explanation: The next term is the sum of previous three terms. 68 + 37 + 20 =125

2. 2, 2, 5, 13, 28, ?

Ans. 52

Explanation: The pattern is
1^2 -1, 2^2-1, 3^2 -1, 4^2-1,5^5 -1

3. 13, 35, 57, 79, 911, ?

Ans. 1113

Explanation: The sequence is formed by joining consecutive odd numbers.
1 with 3 = 13
3 with 5 = 35
5 with 7 = 57
7 with 9 = 79
9 with 11 = 911
Therefore, 11 with 13 = 1113

4. 33 ,8 ,41 ,46 ,21 ,67, 72, 47, 119 ,124, ?

Ans.  149

Explanation: 33+8=41, 46+21=67,72+47=119
Also, 33-8 = 25
46-21 = 25
72-47 = 25
124+25 = 149

5. 115, 100, 86, 74, 65, 60, ?

Ans. 60

Explanation:The difference  between the numbers 15, 14, 12, 9, 5
Now difference between the above terms : 1, 2, 3, 4
Therefore the next term should be 5. So, we 5-5=0 .Therefore 60 - 0 =60.

6. 1370, 1320, 1070, -180, ?

Ans. -6430

Explanation: The difference the numbers -50, -250, -1250
So, clearly the sequence is -50*5 =-250, -250*5 = -1250, -1250*5 = -6250
Therefore, -6250 -180 = - 6430

7. 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 3, 3, 5, 6  ?

Ans. 4

Explanation: 1 1 ---- 1 2 ------2 2----3 4 -----3 3----- 5 6
Therefore, the next term is 4

8.  38, 36, 76, 35, 114, 34, ?

Ans. 152

Explanation:  38+38=76
76+38=114
114+38=152.

9. 507, 169, 248, 62, 36, 12, 168, 42, 168 ?

Ans. 56

Explanation:
169 * 3 = 507
12*3=36
Therefore ? * 3 = 168 . So, we are getting 56

10.  2, 8, 3, 27, 4, 64, 5, 125, 6, 216, ?

Ans. 7

Explanation: The alternative term as just  increased by 1. The reaming terms are just cube of the previous term.

TCS Interview Experience – NIT Durgapur 2014

This interview experience is shared by an IT Student of NIT Durgapur. (On-campus recruitment 2014 batch).

TCS visited NIT Durgapur on 19 September, 2013. As it was the first mass recruiter company to visit our college, so maximum number of student sat for this placement. It was approx. 850 students, including PG students.

In NIT Durgapur, each student can get maximum of two jobs, one from mass recruiter company and other from Non-mass recruiter company. TCS, IBM, Capgemini, Infosys was supposed to visit NIT Durgapur as mass recruiter company but afterward, Infosys was canceled as TCS visited in first slot.

Now, let’s come to my interview experience.

The TCS recruitment process started with a PPT at 9 A.M. Only few students got to watch the PPT as the assembly hall was not that big to accommodate all the students. I enjoyed watching the animation in the PPT more that the content of the PPT. It was a lengthy video and I was saying myself that “why I am here “.
After waiting for sometime, my turn to give the Online Aptitude Test came. The English part was easy, and in aptitude part 60% percent of the questions are of medium difficulty level.  In my aptitude part, most of the questions are from permutation, combination and probability. I discussed few difficult questions with my friends who sat beside me and found that we are getting maximum same questions, but in different order and options are also changed. I calculated that I attended 25 questions without a single guess. After giving the exam, I was still not 100% sure that I will be selected or not for the next round. The feeling of getting rejected was there as I was rejected in few non-mass recruiter companies that visited NIT Durgapur before TCS. We waited for approx. 20 minutes after which the result got declared.  The name was declared department wise.  When I got to hear  my name, seriously I can’t express my feelings. At last, the  rejection sequence from aptitude round got over. Now, we have to face the interview round in same day.

Let’s come to the details conversation in the Interview Round.

Again after waiting for a while, my turn for the interview at last came. When my name was called for the interview, my tension started till I control to some extend and entered the room. It was a panel of three people. I was expecting only two people as few friends who attended interview before  me told that.
I will try to give you the exact conversation that took place to the extends I remembered. To make it easy to explain,  let’s give three interviews a name  as Tech 1 (Technical interviewer 1) , Tech 2 and the other the HR  (the third person was an HR, and I get to know that during my Interview ). My technical and HR interview was combined. So, let’s start.

Me- Good evening sir to three interviewers.

Tech 1- Sit down.

Tech 2- Ok , So Introduce yourself.

Me- I did not prepare the answer of this question. So, I started in my style. Mainly, the points that are coming to my mind, I am just going on saying that. The introduction part was ok as I had answered this question many times when I was in first year. When I was giving my introduction, the HR was less interested in what I am saying. He was busy with his laptop. The tech 1 and tech 2 interviewers are quite interestingly hearing what I am saying. My intro was lengthily as I didn't prepare beforehand. You  try to prepare beforehand, it will be seriously helpful during the interview.

Tech 1- What project you have done ?

Me- answered

Tech 1- Explain it ,  on which part you have worked on your project ?

Me- It was a long description about project. In between few technical questions related to project was asked by Tech 2 interviewer.

Tech 1 - What is your favorite language ?

Me- C++

Tech 1- What is Inheritance?

Me- answered

Tech 1- type of inheritance?

Me: answered.

Tech 2- handed me a paper and said to explain it ?

Me: drawn the diagram.

Tech 1- are u sure that what you explained is correct ?

Me- I started rechecking my diagram. I did not found any error. Yes Sir, they are correct.

Tech 2-  Collected the paper from me.

Till now HR was busy with his laptop. Suddenly he told me from where you have done your internship?

Me- answered.

HR - started to search the company name in the internet from where I have done the internship?

HR - So, explain how’s the experience during your internship ?

Me- I explain little about what I did there, the new  thing I get to know .

HR- Did you attended PPT session in the morning ?

Me-Yes. I was thinking that please don’t ask any question from ppt I will not be able to answer.

HR- Did you know about the bond ? are u ok with it ?

Me- Yes sir, Its fine.

HR- told to tech 1 and tech 2 that if you have any questions you can ask .

Tech 1- No

Tech 2- No.

HR - any question ?

Me- the duration of ILP ?

HR- answered .

HR- ok, then u may leave now.

 Me- Thank You Sir.

I was sure that I will be  selected as my interview gone smoothly.

Next day at 9:30 P.M the result got declared. I got selected. Total 196 got selected out of approx. 250 that cleared aptitude round.

Any advice for our readers

1. Go through your Project thoroughly, they will tell  to explain it.
2. Choose your favorite subject , and try to cover most part of it .
3. Don't have to go into detailed study about other subjects. They only ask basic questions.
4. Be confident in what you say.

The approach you should follow to crack an Interview based on your project

We have got lots of requests from our readers asking for some ideas and tricks that will help them to crack an interview process. So, we collected some set of Interview Experience of different companies through our student representatives and TPR’s of different colleges. As this is going to be our first featured post about Interview Experience, so we though that it should be something special in terms of ideas and tricks to crack an interview. So we though that it will be better if we take advice from an IIT student, who recently got an offer from US based company and give you the approach you should follow to crack an interview. Our Interview Time Group Team tried to give you the best approach.

We will try to give you the overall approach  you should follow to crack an interview based on your project without going through the details about technical and HR  interview step by step process.

In our maximum sets of collected Interview Experience, we found that the first question was “Introduce Yourself.". You can expect the same question as the first and most important question.
You must be thinking that why we are saying this simple common question as most important question. So, wait, we are going to explain it.

This question has the potential to decide the direction of your interview.  So, with the help of this question, you can take the control of the whole technical as well as HR interview process. It means  you can increase the probability that  the interviewer will ask you that questions what you want them to ask you.

Let's come into some details how to make it possible.

So, first thing you have to do is to make a proper structure of the points what you will be going to say in the interview for your “ Introduce Yourself” question.  So, let’s give any example to make it clear.

There are many formats by which you can start your answer. Here we are giving a general format, which you can follow.
I am ___________________, born and brought up at ___________________.  I have completed my schooling from ______________ with ___% in 12th standard and __% in 10th standard. I am doing B.tech in _____________stream from ___________.My CGPA up to 7th semester is _______.

Let’s first explain the above part, and then again, we will continue with remaining introduce yourself part. This is just a formal and short introduction about yourself. You can modify the above format in your style but keep this basic information in it.
This is the common format, so every single student will say the same in front of the interviewer.
So, how to make it different from others.

The approach how you speak will make it different. When you are saying the above lines, it should not look like that you have memorized it beforehand. It gives a bad impression, if its look like  you are giving a speech in front of  an interviewer that you have memorized. Just practice at home in front of mirror, and watch that it looks normal as you are having some formal discussion with someone. If you practice it twice you will be able to do that. We are saying this, as the whole  interview is dependent on how you start and answer the first question.

Now let’s continue with the Introduce yourself part from where we left. We have to give a small description about our family background.

Now, coming to my family background. There are ___ members in my family, including me. My father is working in __________. My mother is a homemaker. I have __ sisters and __ brothers.

Keep it short and simple. If any of your sister or brother is working in IT company or any educational Institute, then you should also include their occupation, and mention the name of the company or educational Institute. If you are sitting in an interview for any IT company and any other member is already in this field, then  try to highlight it in the family background section.

Now, coming to most important part. You have to give a short description about project, strong and weak points, the programming language you are good at and all that. It's totally on you what you want to include here.

Now, we will get some ideas from an IIT student, about how he faced his on-campus interview during a visit of  a US based Company.

So, let’s get the idea how he used this “Introduce yourself” question to plan that he gets less number of technical question other than something related to his project. The trick will work to some extend in top high pay companies, but it will surely work for any mass recruitment and medium package companies. Those who are sitting for TCS, IBM, Cognizant, Capgemini, Infosys will surely be helpful by using this approach.

So, now let's see his way of facing the interview.

I will not go into much details about my whole interview process. I will only try to give you the tricks that can help you to increase the probability of getting selected. I am also going to explain one tricks that will help you to get less numbers of technical questions in interview other than related to your project.

After describing the personal details and family background, you can directly come to your project work part and give a very short description about it. Project plays a very vital role in technical Interview. A well-executed project can increase the chance of getting selected to 90%. If you have an interesting or uncommon project topic, you can expect the next question will be based on your project work after introduce yourself. You have to highlight the importance of your project, so that they ask more  questions from your project work.

So, let's start by explaining some parts of my Interview Experience.

I have done a project on "Hack proof Online System". While giving short description about it  during my interview, one of the interviewers  stopped me in the middle and said, "  hacking ???? ". As to give an appropriate answer to this question, I have  to describe my project in details. So,  I told the interviewer Sir, I will complete my introduce yourself, or directly I will start explaining the project in details.I have said this because the question "Introduce yourself"  has been asked by a different interviewer. I think that you much complete every single question asked by the interviewer before going to the next if it's not one-sentence answer. It may happen that two or three questions have been asked to you at the same time, try to answer one by one.

The most common project related question you can expect from the interviewer is "Describe your Project in details" .So, you must go through every single part of the project thoroughly. In my point of view, this is the  question where you can maximize your chances of selection.

To increase the probability of getting selected based on the project work you have to find something unique in your project. Try to find out how your techniques to solve the problems in your project is better than the techniques that are available in the Internet. In most cases, it will not be possible to find best solution, but try a different way of solving the problem. It must have some advantage and disadvantage from other related projects So, try to highlight it.

Now, again getting back to my interview Experience.

During my interview, when I was explaining the details of my project, I was getting to know that they are satisfied with my project and now the technical question other than project  related will start. However, I wanted to explain more about my project and tell something more about the advantage of my project related to other projects of the same field. So, I take a paper for one the interviewer and started explaining the advantage and how the work is done by writing small actual  algorithm. They are taking interest in that. So, by this way, I extend the explanation of my project work to 20 min more. Mainly, I have done two thinks by asking for a paper to the interviewer. This shown that how much I am confident and serious about my project work and extending the discussion about project work means that I was taking the discussion to the way I wanted. The above technique can be used in any mass recruiter company, to increase the probability of getting less numbers of technical questions in a interview other than related to your project. If you describe more about your project work, we will surely get less no of technical question and its surely would be advantage for you. In my case after the interview got over, I got to know that my friend got more technical questions than me.

In mass recruiter companies, generally each single question will be asked based on CV. So don't write anything only to impress the interviewers without knowing about it. You have to use your C.V to plan, how to highlight the strong points. The idea behind the type of question asked by an interviewer that you want is that you have to generate questions while you are answering. Generally, during describing your project, it's quite easy do this trick.

So, hope that you have got some ideas how to take an interview to  right direction.

You must have got an approach to the start the interview and how to take it forward.

We are getting mails from our readers asking for type of question asked in  TCS, Infosys , IBM ,CTS , Capgemini during technical interview. Soon we will be posting specific interview experience of each company. Now we are specifying the general process you can follow for your preparation.

Programming Language: C and C++ or Java. (It's enough ). If you are good at some other, then only  mention it. You much only mention the programming language you are good at. Mentioning five or six programming language doesn't increase the chance of getting selected.
You will be asked some basic questions from OS, Networking and DBMS. So try to go through it.  Sometimes they may say you to write some algorithm, so  go through the data structure part also.(Sorting, searching and their Complexity).
They may ask you for your favorite subject. So, mention the one you are good at and also try to restrict them to your favorite subject only. I think you have got some idea how to do that. Questions will be asked based on what is mentioned in  your  CV ,just go through it properly and go through the project work thoroughly.

The main thing is that, If you are confident enough during your interview, then already half of the battle is won.

Hope that we have been able to provide you some  approach to face the interview. We will some post some more details discussion about tricks to crack an interview. Like us on Facebook to get the updates.

Here are some exact questions collected from Cognizant Online Test conducted by AMCAT.

1. How many 3 digit numbers can be formed from the digits 2,3,5,6,7 and 9 which are divisible by 5 and none of the digits is repeated?

Ans. 20

Explanation: Since each desired number is divisible by 5, so we much have 5 at the unit place.
Now tens place can be filled by any of the remaining 5 digits
The hundreds place can now be filled by any of the remaining 4 digits .
 Required number of numbers  = (1 * 5 * 4) = 20

2. How many arrangements can be made out of the letters of the word 'MATHEMATICS' be arranged  so that the vowels always come together ?

Ans. 120960

Explanation: In the word 'MATHEMATICS' we treat vowel AEAI as one letter thus we have MTHMTCS(AEAI)
now we have to arrange 8 letters out of which M occurs twice ,T occurs twice & the rest are different
Number of ways of arranging these letters = 8! / (2!)(2!) = 10080
Now AEAI has 4 letters in which A occurs 2 times and the rest are different
Number of ways of arranging these letters = 4! / 2! = 12
Required number of words = (10080 * 12) = 120960

3. The sum of the ages of  the 5 children's born at the intervals of  3 years each is 50 years what is the age of the youngest child ?

 Ans. 4 years

Explanation: Let the age of the children's be
x ,x+3, x+6, x+9, x+12.
x+(x+3)+(x+6)+(x+9)+(x+12)  = 50
5x+30  =  50
5x = 20
x=4.
Age of the youngest child is x = 4 years.

4.  A bag contains 6 white and 4 black balls .Two balls are drawn at random .Find the probability that they are of the same color?

Ans. 7/45

Explanation: Let S be the sample space.
Number of ways for drawing two balls out of 6 white and
4 red balls = 10C2
=10!/(8!*2!) = 45.
n(S) =45.
Let E =event of getting both balls of the same color.
Then n(E) = number of ways of drawing ( 2balls out of 6) or
(2 balls out of 4).
= 6C2 +4C2
= 6!/(4!*2!) + 4!/(2! *2!)
= 6*5/2 +4 *3/2
=15+6 =21.
P(E) =n(E)/n(S) =21/45 =7/45.

5. In how many  a committee of 5 members can be selected from 6 men 5 ladies consisting of 3 men and 2 ladies ?

Ans. 200

Explanation: 3 men out of 6 and 2 ladies out of 5 are to be chosen
Required number of ways
=(6C3 * 5C2)
= 200

6. A man sold two flats for Rs 675,958 each .On one he gains 16% while on the other he losses 16%. How much does he gain or lose in the whole transaction?

Ans: Loss 2.56%

Explanation: Loss%=[common loss or gain%/10]2=(16/10)2=2.56%

7. The average price of 10 books is increased by 17 Rupees when one of them whose value is Rs.400 is replaced by a new book. What is the price of new book?

Ans. Rs. 570

Explanation: 10 books Average increases by 17 Rupees.So. 10*17= 170.So the new book cost is more and by adding its cost average increase, therefore the cost of new book is 400+170=570.

8. Find least number which when divided by 20,25,35,40 leaves remainders 14,19,29,34?

Ans. 1394

Explanation: 20–14=6
25-19=6
35-29=6
40-34=6
Therefore number = LCM of (20,25,35,40) - 6=1394

The quantitative aptitude part of the online test is quite easy. Quantitative Aptitude by R.S Aggarwal is enough to crack the quantitative aptitude part.

TCS new Placement Paper 2014 (14)

This new set of placement paper is collected from on-campus recruitment for the session (2013-14).

1.There are 18 horses in a race. The winning probability of  the 1st horse is 1/6, 2nd=1/6 and 3rd is 1/7.There is no possibility of tie.Find the chances that one of these will win the race?

Ans. 85/252

Explanation: Losing probability of 1st horse = 1 - 1/6 =5/6
Losing probability of 2nd horse = 1 - 1/6 = 5/6
Losing probability of 3rd horse = 1-1/7=6/7

The probability that any one horse out of three will win = (1/6*5/6*6/7)+(5/6*1/6*6/7)+(5/6*5/6*1/7)=85/252

*In the above case we only consider the probability of three horses as they are mentioned.

2.  There are 10 points in a straight line AB and 8 points in another line AC. How many triangle can be formed joining this line ?

Ans. 10C2 *8 + 8C2*10

Explanation: First we have to select two points  from AB and join  it with 1 point  in AC. We can do this  10C2 * 8 ways .Now, we have to select two points  from AC and join it with 1 point  in AB. We can do this in 8C2*10 ways. Add the total you will get the answer.

3. Five different color balls are in straight line. Find the probability that 1st ball is RED and 2nd ball is YELLOW ?

Ans. 3!/5!

Explanation: Total no possible outcome = 5!
Total no of favorable outcome = 3! (as RED and YELLOW will be fixed at 1st and 2nd position, so rest 3 will only change position)

4. A closed cylindrical tank  contains 36 pie cubic feet of water and it’s filled to half its capacity. When the tank is placed upright on its circular base on level ground, the height of water in the tank is 4 feet. When the tank is placed on its side on level ground, what is the height, in feet, of the surface of the water above the ground?

Ans. 3

Explanation: When the tank is placed on its side, it would still be half filled and the height of the water would equal half the diameter, which is radius.
 r2 * 4 = 36 , Therefore r = 3.

5. The milk and water in two vessels A and B are in the ratio 4 : 3 and 2: 3 respectively. In what ratio, the liquids in both the vessels are mixed to obtain a new mixture in vessel C containing half milk and half water?

Ans. 7:5

Explanation:Let x quantity of mixture from A will be added to C
Milk in vessels A=4/7. Water in  vessel A=3/7
Let y quantity of mixture from B be added to C
Milk in vessel B=2/5. Water in vessel B=3/5
Therefore,(4x/7+2y/5)/(3x/7+3y/5)=1
x:y=7:5

6. Summation from i=0 to 6409 of ai = ?
where ai= 29(if ai is divided by 13 & 17)
ai= 17(if ai is divided by 13 & 29)
ai= 13(if ai is divided by 17 & 29)
ai=0 (else)

Ans. 1299

Explanation:Case 1: if ai is divided by 13 & 17 then. Now 13*17 = 221
221(1,2,3,.............,29)
Therefore, we get total 29 numbers that are divisible by 13 &17 . So,29*29=841
Case 2: if ai is divided by 13 & 17 then. Now 13* 29 =327
377(1,2,3,..............,17)
Therefore, we get total 17 numbers that are divisible by 13 & 29 . So,17*17=289
Case 3: if ai is divided by 17 & 29 then. Now 17* 29 = 493
493(1,2,3,..............,13)
Therefore, we get total 13 numbers that are divisible by 17 & 29 . So,13*13=169 Therefore , total sum=841+289+169=1299

7. If m+n is divided by 12 then the remainder is 8. If m-n is divided by 12 then the remainder is 6. Find out the remainder when m*n is divided by 6?

Ans. 1

Explanation: m+n is divided by 12 gives remainder 8. We can write 12x+8 = m + n ----(1)
m-n is divided by 12 gives remainder 6. We can write 12y+6 = m - n ------(2)
Now Solving equation (1) and (2) ,we get m=6(x-y)+1 and n=6(x+y)+7
Now,m*n will give u (36(x+y)(x-y))+42(x-y)+6(x+y) +7).  Except 7 ,we will able to divide it by 6.
Now 7 divide by 6 will give remainder 1. So, the answer will be 1.

You will surely get some idea about the type of question asked in TCS online aptitude test. Many students told that they got more questions from permutation, combination, Probability and Geometry part. So, practice more questions from these chapters.

We got some request from our readers to give some example of dummy question that was asked in TCS online aptitude Test.  So, here we are giving one example of exact dummy question that was asked in online test for the session (2013-14).

Which of the following  value of “n” is the number 274 + 22058 + 22n is a perfect square?

A. 2011
B. 2012
C. 2100
D. 2100

Let, Start Solving the problem: 274+22058+22n= (237)2+ (2n)2+ 22058
It is in the formula as (a+b)2=a2+b2+2*a*b
Therefore, 2*(237)*(2n)=2(38+n)=22058
38+n=2058
n=2020

Ans. 2020

Clearly, we are getting answer 2020, but 2020 is not in the option. So, this is a dummy question.
Note- The same question was also asked as a normal question in some set.

Hope that this will clear your doubt.

Here are some questions from TCS latest placement paper.

2. What is the value of ((44444445*88888885*44444442+44444438)/44444444^2)

Ans. 88888883

Explanation: Let 44444444 = x
((x+1)*(2x-3)*(x-2)+(x-6))/x^2
=(x^2-x-2)(2x-3)+(x-6)/x^2
=(2x^3-2x^2-4x-3x^2+3x+6+x-6)/x^2
=(2x^3-5x^2)/x^2
= 2x-5= 2(44444444)-5 = 88888883

3. In this question, A^B means A raised to power B. If x*y^2*z < 0, then which  one of the following statements must also be true?

I.    xz < 0
II.   z < 0
III.  xyz < 0

And I only

Explanation: y^2 is a positive number, so definitely x or z should be negative for the product to
be a negative value. This means that xz always results in a negative value.

4. Aravind  can do  a work  in 24  days. Mani  can dig the same work in 36  days. Aravind, Mani and Hari can do a work together in 8 days. Hari alone can do the work in how many days?

Ans. 18 days

Explanation
A + M + H  = 1/8
1/24 + 1/36 + 1/x =1/8
5/72 + 1/x = 1/8
1/x=4/72
x= 18

(5)*. Two equilateral triangle of side 12cm are placed one on top another, such a 6 pointed star is formed if the six vertices lie on a circle what is the area of the circle not enclosed by the Star?

Ans. 68

The above question was asked at NIT Durgapur as a star mark question. You must know that star mark question has more positive marking compare to normal question.

We are trying to collect more star mark questions, if we are able to get some, we will directly post it in our Facebook page. Like us on Facebook to get the updates.

6. If 28a + 30b+ 31c=365, find the value of a+b+c, if a, b, and c are natural numbers?

Ans 12.

7. In a triangle ABC, the lengths of the sides AB and AC are 17.5cm and 9cm. Let D be a point on the line segment BC such that AD is perpendicular to BC. If AD=3cm, then what is the radius (in cm) of the circle circumscribing the triangle?

Ans. 26.25

Explanation: AB = c=17.5,AC = b = 9.
Let Base = BC  = a, Height =  AD = 3;
Area of triangle ABC= abc/4R
We also know that area of triangle is 1/2 * base *height
Area of the triangle ABC = ½ (BC)(AD) = ½ (a)(3) = 3a/2 .....(1)
Now using the 1st formula, ABC= abc/4R and substituting the value of equ (1)
We get, R = abc/4Δ = abc / 4(3a/2) = bc/6 = (17.5)(9)/6 = 26.25

Points to keep in mind while appearing for the TCS Online Aptitude Test

TCS is going to recruit approx. 4,000 students from this off-campus recruitment 2014. We are the first to give the confirmation that TCS is quite serious for its off-campus this year and soon the process of recruitment will start.  If you have missed that featured post where a TCS HR answered some of the questions related to off-campus, then you can read it now. As we got green signal from HR that they will  surely be organizing its off-campus, we told all our student representatives of different colleges to collect some important points that students could keep in mind while appearing for its Online Aptitude Test.

Point No 1: After you have been allocated a machine for your online Aptitude Test, you will get approx. 10 to 15 minutes or even more before the test starts. Just open Microsoft word or any text editor and type an email about any topic that comes to your mind. As you have to go through the Verbal part just after 10 minutes, this step will help you to increase your typing speed while attending the verbal part. You can skip this step if you are good  at typing. Follow the above step if TCS official has no problem. In most of the colleges it’s allowed, but also we got some rare case where TCS official had not allowed to open anything in desktop.

Now coming to the verbal part of the online test.

You will have to write an email. Just follow these simple steps, you can crack this round easily.
Below example is taken from TCS Online portal.

Using the following phrases, write an email with minimum of 70 words to the customer Mr. Gill Roy explaining delay to the project.

Payment processing system – Schedule – 10th May (Friday) – Unexpected power outage – 3 days – Overall delay – 7 days – includes recovery of lost work – will not recur

Point No 2: After getting the email question, first built the structure of the email in our mind after reading it twice properly. Take maximum of 3 minutes and after that start writing the email and be fast. If possible keep the last minute for checking it else while you are writing we can check it.

In the above mail receiver name is given but the sender name is not given. In the sender's name place, you have to give your name. In some email, you will find that both sender and receiver's name is given. Take care that who is the sender and who is the receiver, see that they are at the right place. If you make mistakes there, then its game over. So, be careful. At the end don't forget to write 'Regards' and then sender name.

Point No 3: Be careful of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors and also keep track of the number of words. You don't have to calculate it, there is word counter in TCS online test Application. Plus 20 or 30 words will not make any negative impact, but less than 70 words will surely have some negative impact. So, keep it in mind.

Point No 4: It may happen that you find one or two words out of 10 that you cannot figure out how to use it in the email. So, don’t worry, write a grammatical correct sentence related to the email and insert the word so that its matches the sentence. Even its will not make any meaning to the context but as your email will be checked by a computer software, it will not  give any negative marking. This idea is given by a student of NIT, Jamshedpur, who have  actually tested it.

Point No 5: It's always better to use the given words in sequence as they appear in the question. If you are unable to use them in sequence as given in question, then go for the order you like.

Now coming to the Analytical Ability part of Online Test.

Point No 6: TCS has not changed anything in their question set database. So, you will get same set of questions that are already asked in on-campus for the session (2013-14). Just go through all set of questions posted in interviewtime.in, you will surely get some question common in your online aptitude test, but it’s totally depended on your luck that how many you will get common. We will soon post some more TCS latest placement paper so don’t forget to check it out.

Point No 7: Cutoff for this TCS online aptitude test. TCS official said that off-campus cutoff will be same as on-campus recruitment. This year on-campus  cutoff varies from 12 to 18. In off-campus, we think that it will vary from 12 to 15. Generally, the cutoff is high in NIT's and some top colleges, so cutoff  rise to 16 to 18. So, if you give 16 correct answer, you will surely find your name in the selected student list for the interview.

Point No 8: You should know the  truth behind Dummy question. Yes, you may get a Dummy question. Probability of getting dummy question is high. Dummy question simply means that you will not find any correct option for that particular question. So, what to do? Leave the question. Yes, some marks will be added for you if you leave it, but it has more negative impact if you go for guessing for dummy question. If you have answered 20 questions correctly with the dummy question with a guess,  you may not get selected for the interview. Even we are not fully aware about the impact of Dummy question.

One solution to this problem, Don’t go for Guessing. There will be maximum one dummy question, so if you encounter one question having no correct option just skip it without wasting time.

Point No 9: There will be two star mark question, which carries more marks compared to normal question. So, give more time to solve these questions. These questions are difficult to solve compared to normal questions. Also keep one thing in mind these questions has more negative marking than other normal questions. So, again don’t go for any kind of Guessing.

Point No 10: Don’t use the scientific calculator that has been provided on the test screen. It’s always better that you carry a scientific calculator. There is a  big reason why we are saying so. Firstly, TCS on-screen calculator is not totally compatible for use with keyboard, yes you can use the on-screen calculator using a mouse but it will take more time for calculation. It's always better to use your own digital calculator. If you forget to bring your calculator, then use the on-screen calculator using  mouse.

Point No 11:  Don't get panic at any condition. Only solving 15 to 16 question will take you to the interview round.

Point No 12: Just go to TCS Seesame online test portal , and give a test. This will help you to become familiar with their Online test application user interface. The same Online test Application will be used for your online test.

The above 12 points are totally based on on-campus recruitment for the session (2013-14). The same rule surely will help you  to clear the Online Test.
We will soon post some more TCS latest placement papers.

TCS Latest Placement Paper 2014 (12)

This set of placement paper is collected from on-campus recruitment for the session (2013-14) at NIT, Surathkal. Try to solve each question as all these questions are getting repeated.

1. There are 3 people A, B, C having a total share of Rs 3,000. A’s share is 2/3rd of the sum of B and C’s shares. C’s share is ½ of the sum of A and B’s shares. What is the value of C’s share?

Ans: 1000

Explanation: A + B +C = 3000  …………….(1)
½(A+B)+A+B=3000
3A +3B = 6000
A+B=2000  …………………….(2)
Now, substituting the value of equation (2) in equation (1)
A + B + C = 3000
2000 + C =3000
C =1000

2. The total income of Amit in 2003, 2004, 2005 is 364000. Every year there is an increase in his salary by 20%. What is the salary in 2005?

Ans. 144000

Explanation: Let Amit salary in 2003 is x.
Therefore, salary in 2004 was 120/100 x and salary in 2005 is 120/100(120/100)x.
x+ 120/100x + 120/100(120/100)x= 364000
x + 120/100 x + 144/100 x = 364000
(364/100)x = 364000
x= 1,00,000
Therefore, Salary in 2005 is (364000-120000-100000) = 144000

3. In how many ways a team of 11 members can be formed from 5 men and 11 women such that the team have at most 3 men?

Ans. 2256

Explanation: 1st Case:  The team has no men member = 11C11 = 1
2nd Case:    The team has 1 men member = 11C10 * 5C1 =11 * 5 = 55
3rd Case:     The team has 2 men members = 11C9 * 5C2 = 55 *10 = 550
4th Case:      The team has 3 men members= 11C8 *5C3 = 165 * 10 = 1650
Therefore, Total no of ways = 1+55+550+1650= 2256

4. In a set of 30 numbers, average of 1st 10 numbers is equal to the average of last 20 numbers .Find the sum of last 20 numbers?

Ans. Twice the sum of first 10 numbers

Explanation: Average = (Total sum of Numbers/ No. of numbers )
(Sum of first 10 numbers/10) = ( sum of last 20 numbers /20)
Therefore, Sum of last 20 numbers = 2 * sum of first 10 numbers .

5. In a class, there are 9 students in which there are 5 boys and 4 girls. In a row, there will always a boy between any two girls. Find out how many such arrangement possible?

Ans. 43200

Explanation: 5 boys can be arranged in 5! ways.
There are six place  for girls. The girls can choose any 4 out of 6 .Therefore 6C4.
Now 4 girls will have 4! ways of arrangement between themselves.
Total no. of such arrangement = 120 * 15 * 24 = 43200

6. What no. should be added to 5678 so that the remainder is 35 when divided by 460?

Ans. 337

Explanation: 5678%460=158
(460-158)+35=337

7. In 2003 there are 28 days in February and 365 days in that year, in 2004 there are 29 days in February and 366 days in that year. If the date 11 march 2003 is Tuesday, then which would be the date for 11 march 2004?

Ans. Thursday

Explanation: It’s given that 11 march 2003 is Tuesday. We have to find which day is 11 march 2004
So, there is difference of 366 days between the two dates.
Therefore, no of odd days = (366%7)= 2. So, it will be Thursday.
